Agoraphobia today describes severe and pervasive anxiety about being in situations from which escape might be difficult of embarrassing and/or from which help may not be available should a panic attack occur. Agoraphobia is the following:

  1. Fear of being alone
  2. Fear of losing control in a public place
  3. Fear of being in places where escape might be difficult
  4. Becoming house bound for prolonged periods
  5. Feelings of detachment or estrangement from others
  6. Feelings of helplessness
  7. Dependence upon others
  8. Feeling that the body is unreal
  9. Feeling that the environment is unreal
  10. Anxiety or panic attack (acute severe anxiety)
  11. Unusual temper or agitation with trembling or twitching
  12. Additional symptoms that may occur:
  13. Lightheadedness, near fainting
  14. Dizziness
  15. Excessive sweating
  16. Skin flushing
  17. Breathing difficulty
  18. Chest pain
  19. Heartbeat sensations
  20. Nausea and vomiting
  21. Numbness and tingling
  22. Abdominal distress that occurs when upset
  23. Confused or disordered thoughts
  24. Intense fear of going crazy
  25. Intense fear of dying
