Fire prevention and safety in the home are very important. Follow this advice to help keep you and your family safe from from fires:

  1. Install a smoke alarm on every level of your home and test it monthly.
  2. Keep fire extinguishers on hand, and make sure your family knows how to use them. Know fire prevention rules.
  3. Practice an escape plan from every room in the house once a month.
  4. Practice feeling your way out of the house in the dark or with your eyes closed.
  5. Keep matches and lighters locked up and away from children. Teach your children that fire is a tool, not a toy and not to hide from firefighters.
  6. Designate a meeting place outside so that no one will be hurt looking for someone who is already safe.
  7. Never overload circuits or extension cords.
  8. Overheating, unusual smells, shorts and sparks are all warning signs that appliances need to be shut off, then replaced or repaired.
  9. Keep anything combustible at least three feet away from portable heaters.
  10. Fire sprinklers are affordable and increase your chances of surviving a fire.
