Sounds too good to be true, but recent studies offer impressive evidence that the ancient discipline of transcendental meditation (TM) does, indeed, have beneficial effects on the heart. A study conducted by Harvard cardiologist Herbert Benson, along with additional research, reports the use of  TM is sometimes associated with:

  1. reduced health care use
  2. increased longevity and quality of life
  3. reduction of chronic pain,
  4. anxiety, high blood pressure
  5. effective treatment of post- traumatic stress syndrome in Vietnam veterans
  6. blood pressure reduction in African Americans
  7. lowered blood cortisol levels initially brought on by stress
