What to expect, what to do, how to shop and how to plan for a perfect prom night -- even if it isn't a "perfect" prom night..

1. Set realistic expectations. You may not have the perfect date or the exact dress you wanted (but that cost too much) -- but you can look your best, enjoy your friends, have a great time and create great memories.
2. Start shopping for your dress early. Manufacturers make X number of dresses in each style anticipating demand for the prom season, which typically spans from Jan to April. Shopping early will give you more choice since the closer it gets to the end of the season the more dresses will have sold out in the store AND with the manufacturer so that they may not even be available for special order.
3. Do go to a reputable boutique and allow them to help you pick a dress. Don't assume they are just trying to sell you a dress. The best test is to notice if they will tell you when something doesn't look good on you. If they do then they have the training and experience to know what cuts, fabrics and colors will flatter your specific body and coloring.
4. Do let store owners suggest dresses for you. Formal dresses do not look good on hangers. The store staff knows what it looks on a body and can usually imagine what it will look like on you.
5. Do let store owners help you pick a size if you special order a dress. Formalwear sizes run small. Companies measurement charts are different and owners have ordered from these companies many times before. Trust their experience rather than insisting on what sizes you've order in the past. Your body isn't any different -- but the companies and gown cuts are!
6. Do think about details ahead of time. You will want an evening bag small enough to be elegant but large enough to hold your lipstick, cell phone, camera, some cash and whatever else you may want to keep nearby. Do get an evening bag with a strap so that you can dance without worrying about someone picking it up from your table!
7. Remember step one. Your prom night will not be perfect. If you plan ahead, have reasonable expectations and anticipate some details not being just like what you've daydreamed about -- you will have a great prom night.
