Beginning Guitar Tips! (From someone whose been there...)
HOW TO
Tags: guitar, beginner, musical instruments, how to, hobbies
I thought it would be nice to make a list of tips for people who are just beginning to take up the guitar. When I began playing, these were some key tips that helped me get started; I hope they help you as much as they helped me! Good luck, and keep on playing!
| | Don't buy an expensive, shiny, new guitar!! An old or used guitar will serve you just as well, and it will be rewarding to "upgrade" once you get the hang of things. |
| | You don't need to be able to read music! If you're no Beethoven, no worries, reading music is not a necessary part of guitar playing. Most music is written in "tab", which is a simplified version of music just for the guitar. However, learning the basic rhythms would be a good idea so you can keep a beat! |
| | Your fingers ache?? Developing callouses on your fingers is a big step in the right direction; they will let you play easier and faster once they are established. Until then, grin and bear it while your fingers adjust to the pain of the strings. |
| | Playing along to your favorite songs can be a great help. Pick a few of your favorites, find tabs, pop in your CD (or MP3, etc...) and play along! This will help you establish correct rythem and is a great way to keep motivated. |
| | Be confident! In the beginning, the guitar will not come easy... but the most important thing is to have fun and impress YOURSELF! |
