The best Christmas gifts to buy for the (broke) college student
BESTS
Tags: Christmas, gifts, college, student
While getting diamonds, designer shoes, and Playstation 3 might be a dream come true for a lot of college students, the truth of the matter is that when you're tired, hungry, and broke, most students are probably more interested in selling their diamonds then getting more. I decided to make this list to help people choose more practical and useful Christmas gifts for a college student. Its time to give your student something they'll really use!!
| | Gift Certificates - not to Abercrombie & Fitch; we're talking Target, Walmart, and for the healthy-fooders, Whole Foods. Expensive clothes are fun, but toilet paper, pencils, and food are necessary. It might seem dumb, but buying the simple things really adds up! |
| | Games - a Nintendo Wii might be overkill, but a surprising number of college students really enjoy their board games!! They are a great week-night activity, and a lot of people can hang and play together. Personal favorites include: SceneIT!, Trivial Pursuit, and Life (sometimes its fun to pretend college is over...) |
| | Hobbies - did your student really enjoy something in grade school that they forgot about at college? Probably. Reinvent the hobby for them! If she loved art, but her a new set of pencils, quality paper, etc... If he loved music, buy him a (cheap) guitar; no really, a used $50 guitar can prove to be one of the most entertaining and enjoyable gifts, even if they've never played before! |
| | Toiletries - paper towels might not be a fun gift, but it you put together a "survival" package of toiletries, it can become a usefully and really funny gift. Throw in some tissues, razors, deodorant, toilet paper, ear plugs, band aids, etc... If you're REALLY comfortable with your student, or this is a gift for a friend, adding in "hangover remedies" is always fun... |
| | Tickets - if you want to splurge on your student a little, but still want to get them a gift they will really use, buy them tickets!!! Are they going somewhere for Spring Break? Help them out and surprise them with plane tickets. If he or she really loves concerts or performances, check out Ticketmaster.com for shows in they're area at school; you can buy tickets for a specific show, or you can create an "IOU" for any show of their choice. It might be a one time gift, but going to a concert with no financial obligations is a real weight off of students' shoulders!! |
