Best Books To Learn About the History of the Congo
BESTS
Tags: congo, africa, best books
These are my top choices for books to learn all about the history of the Congo. Some of them are really hard reads and others read more like novels, but each will give you a different perspective of the history.
| | King Leopold's Ghost by Adam Hochschild- Takes a look at Belguim's role in the colonization of the Congo. A good read, but not for the queasy. |
| | Facing the Congo by Jeffrey Tayler- One of the more recent narratives of what it is like traveling through the Congo. A great memoir. |
| | Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad- Facing the Congo is almost an updated version of Conrad's own trip. It is amazing how little has changed in so many years. You have to take this read slowly, but when you do and if you can appreciate it for what it is, it is worth it. |
| | Through the Dark Continent by Henry Stanley- Through the Darkness is such a significant first hand account on the Congo because it was written prior to the boom of colonization. It really is the first look at an entirely new world, something you really can't get anymore. |
| | Swimming in the Congo by Margaret Meyers- This is an easier read. The book consists of a bunch of short stories that follows the life of the authoress growing up in the Congo. I like this book for its honesty and the child's eye view of the world. |
