Great Books on Understanding the Philippines
INFORMATIVE
Tags: Philippines, Magsaysay, Marcos, Aquino, economy, Philippine politics
Chances are good that if you are not from the Philippines or in the US miltary from 1945-1993 you dont know much about this country. As a part of my research to understand the culture and history of the Philippines, I bought several books that turned out to be very helpful. It's a fascinating place with a long history with the US and despite the heat, a nice place to visit.
| | Magsaysay - The People's President - This was by far my favorite. It's almost like a fairy tale story of the greatest president in the Phils. He was honest, hardworking, reliable and connected with the average people of the country like none have since his death. |
| | Ferdinand Marcos and the Philippines - A good book although pricey at about $90. Why are there still people living in country that support his presidency? This books takes a look at the progress he made, the rules he had to break to make them, and his rise to power. |
| | Corazon Aquino and the Brushfire Revolution - Another good one but not my favorite. This details the removal of Marcos and the Peoples' uprising that made it possible, the events leading up to Ninoy's assasination and all the fallout as well as the ups and downs of life under Cory. |
| | In Our Image - America's Empire in the Philippines - A good guide to all the good and the bad the US has done there and an explanation of the connection that Filipinos continue to have with the US. |
| | Philippine Politics and Society in the Twentieth Century - For those of us not having historical background, this is a short but good paper back about the colonial mentality that they still have there and what their future is trending to be. |
