Creative Calorie Burning

Calories are sneaky things. They can creep up on you quickly and virtually unnoticed, until one look at the scale tells you you've been sand-bagged! Here are a few creative ways to reduce and burn off those pesky calories.
| 1. | Laugh - a Vanderbilt University study determined that people who laughed at least 15 minutes a day could burn over 50 calories. |
| 2. | Buy new dishes - Replace your oversized dinnerware with a set containing smaller plates and bowls. You'll automatically cut down on portion size without even trying. |
| 3. | Pretend you're the Coach - At your kids sports events, don't just sit in the stands. Pace the sidelines and keep moving. Watch from different sides of the field. |
| 4. | Park in the Weeds - Parking further into the lot not only increases your walking distance, it can also put you conveniently next to a cart corral and protect your car doors from dings. |
| 5. | Buy Small - Small can mean larger exercise opportunities. In addition to smaller plates, buy smaller packages of food. Less in the package means less to eat. Smaller inside trash cans mean more trips outside to the big can. Smaller eggs mean a slightly reduced, calorie serving portion. |
| 6. | Drink, drink, drink - Dehydration can slow your metabolism by 3 percent. At a weight of 150 pounds, that's about 45 fewer calories burned a day, which could mean almost 5 extra pounds lost in a year. |
| 7. | Grill your Waiter - Ask that your main dish be prepared without additional fat. Find out what menu items are steamed. When your entrée arrives, immediately ask for a to-go box to take half home. Request no bread be brought to the table. Always ask for your salad dressing on the side. |
| 8. | Cook Actively – More effort means more calories burned. Store your most frequently used cooking items & ingredients in inconvenient places. This forces you to bend & stretch to retrieve them. Skip the electric mixer & get an arm workout with a wire whisk. Skip the electric juicer and use bicep power to squeeze your fresh juice. Always grate your own cheese. Hand chop vegetables instead of using a processor. |
| 9. | Try See-Through – Go for clear food items to save calories. Clear soups and broths are a better bet than cream-based items. The same goes for salad dressings. Sugar-free Jello is lower in calories than Sugar-free pudding. Asian Cellophane, or glass noodles are lower in calories than whole wheat noodles. |

Great ideas here. In response to #7, I would say it's much nicer to ask to ask the waiter for the to-go box when you order the meal. (They don't need the extra trip!) And if you're going to ask the waiter lots of questions, remember to repay the favor with a good tip! Comment by: spightlylite
