Do you like dogs? Would you like to learn more about them? Check out these books that I have personally looked at. There are many other great books out there that I would like to read.
| | The Culture Clash by Jean Donaldson is the book I most recommend to everyone interested in dogs. It gives accurate information, debunks myths, and tells you how to communicate with dogs effectively and without suffering on either side. |
| | Don't Shoot the Dog by Karen Pryor is about learning/training in general, despite the title. Understand operant conditioning and apply it to your dog, your fish, your bird, your coworkers, your horse, your dolphin, and/or yourself. |
| | The Other End of the Leash by Patricia McConnell teaches you about how your body language communicates to dogs. Many people "say" the wrong things to dogs unintentionally and have no idea that they are "saying" it. |
| | Before & After You Get Your Puppy by Ian Dunbar has many good points on raising a young dog. While many dogs have fairly good lives despite unhealthy, abnormal, or retarded development, others are set back for life and need more time and effort to work through their issues when they are adults. |
| | Click for Joy! by Melissa Alexander is a great FAQ. If you are confused about any principles or phrases related to dog training, this book will probably have a decent to wonderful answer. |
| | Clicking With Your Dog by Peggy Tillman has illustrations and step-by-step instructions for interacting with your dog, mainly through clicker training. This is the book for people who don't care to learn all about canine behavior, but want clearly written steps to get desired results, in simple language they already know. This is a "how to" book, not a "how it works" book. |
