Washington, D.C., is a great vacation destination in the U.S. There's history on every corner, and there are so many great destinations that have no admission charge.
| | You have enough museums to keep you happy if it rains for your entire vacation. The must-see ones include: The National Gallery, the Museum of American History, the Sackler Gallery, and the Air and Space Museum. They are all located together on the Mall, are easily accessible by public transport and best of all, are free. | | | Lots of historical sites: Everybody should see the Capitol and the Library of Congress at least once in their life, and probably the Supreme Court. | | | Shopping: Georgetown and Dupont Circle, offer excellent and unique stores. | | | Dining: Washington has many excellent places to eat, and probably boasts more types of ethnic dining than many other cities: it has Ethiopian, Burmese, Russian, Vietnamese, and Pakistani restaurants. | | | The Cherry Blossom Festival: usually takes place in early spring, and is a unique site, the only one like it outside of Japan. It also happens to take place during Washington's best weather, in early spring before it is too hot and muggy. It's accessible. Just hop on the Metro (subway) each morning and get anywhere. | | | It's tourist friendly. Everyone in the city is used to tourists and accommodates to them. | | | The Smithsonian museums are awesome. So many, so little time! | | | Sense of history. DC has a rich history and lots of places to explore relating to American history. | | | DC is very easy to get to. I've lived there twice, and visit at least twice a year. Sometimes I take a train (Amtrak is SO CHEAP), other times I fly. You can tour the White House and the U.S. Capitol. You can get free tickets to go to the top of the Washington Monument. | | | Visit funky Adams Morgan, and stay for nightlife in Georgetown. | | | Nearby Arlington is home to the new U.S. Air Force Memorial, as well as the Pentagon and Arlington National Cemetery. | | | Alexandria, VA, is a cute town all its own, and full of history. | | | Make sure to travel the George Washington Memorial Parkway, whether by car or on the parallel bike path, for a lovely ride by the Potomac. |
