1990's Music You May Have Missed
IN THE PAST
Tags: music, 1990's, CD, rock, Wilco, Sparklehorse, Olivia Tremor Control, Beck, Butter 08
The 1990's are known for the rise Grunge and Electronic music, but there were dozens of artists and bands making quality recordings that never made it to the top of the pops. Here are a few of those albums.
| | Wilco: Being There- A sprawling two-disc set from the one-time sweethearts of the Alt-Country scene. This is their break-out record featuring everything from Brian Wilson-esque pop nuggets, Stones influenced bluesy honky-tonk and even soul clapping. |
| | Sparklehorse: Vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplot- Though they win the award for clunkiest album title of the 90's, still Sparklehorse created a subdued masterpiece of studio noodling. There are more clicks, beeps and neurotic moments than a scene with R2-D2 and C3PO. |
| | Olivia Tremor Control: Dusk at Cubist Castle- OTC were members of The Elephant 6 Collective, a loose group of musicians living in the Athens, GA area throughout the 90's. This album is recorded in only four tracks and is decidedly lo-fi, but creates an epic, cinematic listening experience as sweeping as the disc's full title, Music from the Unrealized Film Script: Dusk at Cubist Castle. |
| | Beck: Mutations- After the early-90's hysteria over "Loser", and the mid-90's infatuation with Odelay, Beck quietly released Mutations. The album has some beautiful tracks, some heart breakers, some head scratchers, and plenty of Beck's quirkiness. It was largely ignored. Maybe that was the artist's intention? Regardless, it's a must-buy for fans of the eclectic. |
| | Butter 08: Butter 08- This one-off record features members of Cibbo Matto, The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and Skeleton Key. It's a raucous listen- spanning funk, punk and space/time- recommended as a pre-party album or substitute for coffee. Miho Hatori and Russel Simins split time at the microphone creating a messy blend of saccharine and gruff. Fun and furious, this may be the most highly recommended CD on this list. |
