Top 10 Cover Letter Mistakes
Do's/Don'ts
Tags: cover, letter, tips, applications, job, help, top 10, resume, writing, how to
Don't let the first thing your possible new employer looks at to be bad. Don't do these things:
| 1. | Don't Overuse "I". The cover letter should be more about what interests them. You want them to read it right? |
| 2. | Don't Use a Weak Opening. There are lots of resumes out there. You have 15 seconds for them to decide which pile to put you in, "read" or "discard". |
| 3. | Don't Omit Your Top Selling Points. They aren't hiring you, they are hiring what you can do well. |
| 4. | Don't Make It Too Long. Get to the point, which is to get them to read your resume. |
| 5. | Don't Repeat Your Resume Word for Word. You come across as a "cut and paste" person, not a thinker. |
| 6. | Don't Be Vague. Be direct. |
| 7. | Don't Forget to Customize. Tailor the letter to the prospective employer. Tap into their self interest. |
| 8. | Don't End on a Passive Note. You have one goal, to get an interview. Ask for the sale. |
| 9. | Don't Be Rude. We shouldn't have to say this, but some people are. |
| 10. | Don't Forget to Sign the Letter. It gives it an important personal touch. |
