JUST THE FACTS
Tags: animals, animal facts, animal behavior
These are some facts about pretty common animals (i.e., not blobfish and yeti crabs) that I've never heard before.
| 1. | Crocodiles swallow stones to help them dive and swim. |
| 2. | Whale milk is 50% fat. |
| 3. | Pigeons use landmarks to navigate. |
| 4. | Beavers live in dark dams during the winter, so they have no light to clue them in about when they should sleep. The average day for a beaver during the winter becomes 29 hours. |
| 5. | Mole rats actually do have a limited amount of sight. |
| 6. | Baby chicks make a special call when feeding to alert their brothers and sisters that it's chow time. |
| 7. | There are several species of fish that swap sex organs depending on their hormonal cycle. |
| 8. | Giraffes have one of the most complex blood flow systems of any animal. Their blood vessels prevent blood from rushing to the head when they bend down, and they also keep blood from pooling in the legs and hooves. |
| 9. | The average elephant's brain weighs 11 pounds. |
| 10. | Parrots who speak are more than just repeating what they hear - most can solve logistical problems and master the linguistic skills of a 4 or 5 year old human. |
