I regularly raid the basement and repurpose old stuff for garden construction and maintenance. Be creative and resourceful and you'll see opportunities everywhere. For photos of some of these projects, visit my gardening blog: http://theroot.wordpress.com .
| | Use an old Japanese folding screen as a trellis for tall vining plants. Just rip out the fabric and drill the frame into stakes in the ground. |
| | Stand a large metal dog crate on its end to create a sturdy support for squash plants. Carefully encourage the vines up and around the metal grid. |
| | Leftover decking material can be sawed down to make a raised bed frame. Composite vinyl is a good choice. |
| | Similarly, leftover floor stripping can be used to stake tomatoes in a pinch. A tripod is the sturdiest structure. |
| | If you brew compost tea or other organic fertilizers, do it in an old plastic detergent container. You can find large ones at wholesale stores. Once empty, set them in the shower to rinse them out efficiently. Then it will make an ideal tea brewer: It won't rust and it even has a tap for easy pouring. |
