Places I've been as The Fairly Untraveled
INFORMATIVE
Tags: travel, destinations, vacations, places, US, Paris, Brussels, Lucerne
The world is out there and waiting and I've barely seen it! Here's a few places I HAVE been:
| | Myrtle Beach, SC - all time favorite, been many times, though not lately. Made me love the beach | | | Everglades, Florida - interesting, but have seen it now. Rode in an airboat and worried about crocs. | | | Atlantic City, NJ - was just a kid, but it was no match for the beauty of Myrtle Beach. Squalid hotel room, rickety boardwalk. Watched the diving horse, hated the crowded beach, didn't want to go up in the elevator in the huge tacky elephant. | | | Disney World in 1971 - first year it was open and I loved it. Seems too expensive now. | | | Niagara Falls - the Canadian side. Breathtaking. Loved the lights on the falls changing colors. Lots of tacky museums, low drinking age. Had fun. | | | Hershey PA - enjoyed the chocolate factory but enjoyed munching our way through Amish home-cooking country even more. Gettysburg was memorable but depressing. | | | Cedar Point Amusement Park - the place to be in the 60s. Wooden roller coaster rocked! Hotel Breakers was awesome, even if starting to be a bit shabby. | | | King's Island Amusement Park - home of the Beast. Ok ride, but like CP better. | | | Lake Erie - nice family vacations, but beaches are rocky or non-existent. Good day trip to Kelley's Island. Afraid to eat the fresh-caught fish for fear of pollution. | | | Provincetown, MA - oh what a wonderful trip up through New England! Newport, Kennebunkport, Martha's Vineyard and so much more. Cape Cod is a vision to experience. And my week of study at the Cape Cod School of Art was a pleasure and a privilege. Unforgettable. | | | Ashville, NC - loved Biltmore Estate and the surrounding mountains. Wonderful college community steeped in art and education. | | | Las Vegas, NV - my only trip to the western US so far. Peeked out of the airplane at the Grand Canyon, so can say I saw it with my own eyes. Went to Vegas for the shows and to see an art exhibit owned by Steve Wynn. It was worth it. So was the Bellagio, the glasswork by Chihuly and Cirque di Soleil. The rest was tawdry. Wonderful buffets, though. Loved the champagne with berries for breakfast. | | | Lucerne, Switzerland - enchanting. I literally walked into a storybook and could have stayed there. Loved the train rides and lunch at the top of a mountain in the Alps. Fell in love with down comforters and giant snowflakes. | | | Paris, France - the City of Lights was a dream. Museums, crepes, quaint rooms and dogs permitted in the shops - exquisite. Can it really be my own fault that I was not born here? | | | Brussels, Belgium - my first view of the Grand'Place is a memory I will always hold dear. Thankfully, I bought a pen and ink rendition of it in one of the small alleyways running off from it. Absolute perfection in architecture and ambience. Wonderful food, perfect lace and scrumptious waffles. Just the best. | | | Barcelona, Spain - we stayed along La Ramblas and I fell in love with Picasso - a most disagreeable man, but a beloved genius artist. Cafe la leche became a favorite. Tapas, paella and wine - oh what things to make life grand! | | | Toronto, Canada - went to see a Broadway show, the Lion King - a spectacular vision worth the premium price. The art of costume at its pinnacle. Dinner atop the CN tower was a visual treat - we ate and drank wine in the revolving restaurant while watching the sun set and the lights of the city come to life. We thrilled ourselves with forays onto the glass floor, a mere 1,122' above ground. My stomach did not realign for days. | | | Tampa, Florida - visited a dear friend here several times. Nice day trips to Ybor City and nearby attractions, but do people really long to live in this traffic nightmare? | | | New York City, NY - but of course you must walk through Central Park, visit MOMA and the Guggenheim, and for me, the World Headquarters of Jehovah's Witnesses in Brooklyn. I rode the subway, walked past Carnegie Hall and bought souvenirs in Times Square. I rode the ferry past the Statue of Liberty. I don't know that I could ever adjust to such a fast-paced city. Everyone, but everyone, wore black and walked really fast. I couldn't keep up! | | | Sanibel Resort, Fort Myers, Florida - such a nice retreat, but so expensive! Loved the spa, loved the sushi lunch, but didn't love the expensive cab ride from the airport (no shuttle) or the "a la carte" charge for absolutely everything. Lovely hotel, but not a real beach like Myrtle with the crashing waves. Sigh... |
