Most Overrated American Films
WORSTS
Tags: Movies, American films, films, worsts, overrated
Some movies are critically acclaimed and leave you going "Huh? Best movie of all time?" The American Film Institute even has a list of the 100 Greatest Movies of all Time. These are some of the wickedly over hyped films included on the list.
| 1. | Citizen Kane: Often cited as The Best Movie Ever Made. It is not. I've watched it, and Wow. It left me speechless for all of the wrong reasons. The plot has a huge hole and the main character's emotional scars come from a childhood incident involving a sled. You read right- a sled. I could make a far more coherent movie for a third of what Citizen Kane cost to make ($500,000 in 1941, which in today's dollars is roughly $6,970,041). |
| 2. | Singing in the Rain: It's a good musical for it's day, I guess. But is it the best musical of American cinematic history? I doubt it. It did have a really catchy title song though. |
| 3. | It's a Wonderful Life: This film only became popular after being shown non-stop every Christmas. It was not a huge bomb that many think, but it basically ruined the director's chances of ever being hired by studios again. In fact, the studio allowed the copyright to the film run out in 1974. |
| 4. | Dr. Strangelove: Actually a really good movie, in a weird, dark way. If you have any expectations of a realistic story or acting, however, you will be disappointed. Stanley Kubrick is known for his crazy films, so this fits right in with his catalog. This is on this list because the first time you see it, you will probably be saying "Huh? What just happened?". |
| 5. | Jaws: Why is this on the list with "Taxi Driver", "The Godfather", "Streetcar Named Desire", "The Philadelphia Story" and "Schindler's List"? |
| 6. | Rocky: I don't even need to tell you why this shouldn't be considered one of America's greatest films. If it truly is, I think we deserve all of the flack we get from Europeans about the lack of American artistry. |
| 7. | Not on the American Film Institute's list, but overrated anyway: Napoleon Dynamite. Seriously, it was hailed by some as the year's greatest indie film. One, it wasn't truly an indie film, and two, it's really only sorta funny if you watch it with friends. It becomes real funny when you quote it in conversation with your friends and no one knows what you're talking about. Really, to be great, a funny movie should be funny whether you see it with people or see it yourself. |
| 8. | Not on the American Film Institute's list but should be: Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure/ Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey. I know it's a ridiculous movie with only a cult following, but any movie in which Keanu Reeves displays such good acting is a miracle. And besides, Napoleon eating a sundae and getting sick is cinematic gold. |
