Good Books with Bad Movie Adaptations
WORSTS
Tags: books, literature, movies, adaptations
Movies are good. Books are good. Movies based on books are usually bad.
| | I Am Legend: I Am Legend (2007)- The book is good; a fight between human civilization and mutant creatures that eat us. Somewhat of a spoiler: the end of the movie is completely different. The ending of the book is philosophical, thought provoking, and unexpected (the protagonist is Legend to the mutants- he's just as feared by the mutants as he is of them) . The movie ends with a big explosion that makes no sense. |
| | Alice in Wonderland: Alice in Wonderland (Disney, 1951)- The book is way more twisted, and thus more interesting. The conversations Alice has with herself and the crazy creatures she meets along the way are far more intriguing in the book than in the film (I mean, little kids don't really know about existentialism). Plus, everyone is way more rude (including Alice) in the book. |
| | Dracula: Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992)- The book's plot is ripped apart and a new one is inserted. A love triangle between Dracula and Mina, the heroine, is introduced. Keanu Reeves is the hero. Really, need I go on? |
| | Frankenstein: Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1994)- This pains me. I so want to like the movie, but it stinks. With a cast including Robert DeNiro, Kenneth Branagh, Helena Bonham Carter and John Cleese, it should have been wonderful. Instead, it is too overworked, contains way too many sexual allusions (e.g. electric eels swim into a vat containing amniotic fluid while Frankenstein is on top, screaming), and we end up rooting for the monster the entire movie. |
| | The Jungle Book: The Jungle Book (Disney, 1967)- I love this movie, I admit. It is horribly untrue to the book, and there is a lot of racialism thrown in for good measure. The entire point of the book was to teach life lessons, almost as fables; it was a moralistic teaching aid! While the whole ethics lesson bit is not really conducive to being a popular cartoon movie, virtually none of it was retained. |
