These authors have written books that surprised the hell out of me in one way or another, and for someone who reads a lot, I think that says something.
| | Vladimir Nabokov- He wrote 'Lolita', a book about a love affair between an older man and young girl. In the book, the girl is young enough for Humbert Humbert, the older man, to be considered a pedophile. Surprise: He manages to make you sympathize with the pedophile. |
| | Bret Easton Ellis- In "American Psycho", he throws in a twist ending that I really didn't see coming. Stylistically, his book "The Rules of Attraction" is designed in such a way that each new chapter is from someone else's point of view. Surprise: He pulls it off. |
| | Irvine Welsh- His most well known book was made into a movie starring Ewan Mcgregor, called "Trainspotting". Surprise: It's written entirely phonetically, in a Scottish dialect. |
| | Kurt Vonnegut- He wrote, among other notable works, a book called "Galapagos". Surprise: It's the only book I've read written in future tense. |
| | Michelle Tea- She wrote "Rent Girl", a tale of lesbian prostitutes in San Francisco. Surprise: It's both a novel and a graphic novel all at once! |
| | Neil Gaiman- He wrote "American Gods" about the fall of the old gods and the rise of the new. The story line here is amazing in itself, and well worth multiple reads. Surprise: The villains are gods of cell phones and tvs, and they're children. |
| | Jack Kerouac- Everyone knows Kerouac wrote "On the Road". Surprise: He wrote it in one non-stop sitting, on a scroll. |
