As an American Studies graduate student, this is a list of my of personal favorites / most influencial American novels.
| | The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain- a must read for American Literature enthusiasts. My all time favorite. |
| | The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger- great coming of age novel. |
| | Ham on Rye by Charlies Bukowski- semi autobiographical coming-of-age in Los Angeles during the Great depression/great spin off The Catcher in the Rye. |
| | The Blithedale Romance by Nathaniel Hawthorne- in my opinion, Hawthorne's best novel. Provides autobiographical insight and satire on 19th century reform movements, mostly communal living. |
| | The Deerslayer by James Fenimore Cooper- part of the Leatherstocking tales, iconic western novel |
| | The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald- easy read, great story. |
| | Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe- lengthy but significant |
| | Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut- amazing book by an equally amazing author. |
