Top 10 Christmas Gifts for the Broke Single Mom
BESTS
Tags: christmas, broke, single parent, low income, gifts for single parents, moms
Being a single parent is tough. The holidays are even harder. Buying presents for the single mom's kid is easy, kids are easy to buy for. But what about the single mom? What gifts can she really use? I'm not talking about a brand new, $800 purse. Or a pair of $150 shoes. I'm talking about the every day stuff she needs-stuff a broke, single mom these days can't afford, or can barely afford on her own. If you need ideas, look no further!!
| 1. | Gift card: No, not a gift card to the mall. Or to Nordstrom’s. A gift card may sound cheap and like you thought of it at the last minute. But a $50-$100 gift card, even a $25 gift card-to a store like Wal-Mart, Target or even the local grocery store will allow her to buy laundry soap, toiletries and a few grocery type items. |
| 2. | Relaxation Gift Basket: Fill the gift basket with bubble bath, nail clippers, fancy smelling shampoo, adult themed bubble bath and a couple candles. Something to pamper herself with, to help her relax after the kids are in bed. Throw in a soothing instrumental CD. |
| 3. | A movie for her: Get her a DVD. Something rated R or higher. She does need a break after all from watching Finding Nemo or Horton Hears a Who 500 million times a day. |
| 4. | Family Pass: How about a yearly family pass to the local museum, zoo, aquarium or some other family friendly place? Make it special by throwing in a picnic basket, paper plates, napkins and other supplies so they can have a picnic while taking a trip to where ever you got the family pass to. |
| 5. | Makeup: Get her some make up that matches her skin tone. If you don’t know, ask her ahead of time. Get her a make up kit from a store-they usually have a variety box that contains eye shadow and foundation at this time of year. Get her some nail polish remover, some cotton balls and some professional looking nail polish and/or at home nail kit. Find out what her favorite perfume is and buy her a couple bottles. Throw it in a basket and give it to her. |
| 6. | Take the Kids: Give mom a day off. Take the kids to lunch, a movie or the park. Spend as little or as much as you can. Wear them out. Set up a craft station and have them each make a Christmas gift for mom. Buy a used cookie tin from Goodwill or Thrift store, and clean it up. Have the kids make up a big ol batch of mom’s favorite cookies and wrap it up in the cookie tin for Christmas. |
| 7. | Hire a Cleaning Service: If you can afford it, hire a maid for her for the day. Or a week, or a month. Whatever you can afford. Have them come in and do a deep clean for her. Behind the toilet, the bathtub, scrub the baseboards and even take out the trash. All that yucky stuff she has to do let them do it and give her the day off. |
| 8. | Board Games: Family style board games. Yes this is geared more for the kids…BUT it can be for adults to. Give her a chess set and a how to play guide/instruction set. Her and the kids can learn to play. They both will spend time together, learn something and a activity that doesn’t require batteries will be much loved. |
| 9. | Hosiery: If you are close to her and she needs them for work or other reasons-buy her some new panty hose, new panties, socks and bras. Take her shopping for those items and pay for them, or give her a gift card so she can buy those items her self. |
| 10. | Pay a utility bill: If you can afford this-and you are close to her or she won’t take this the wrong way-pay her light, water/sewer, phone and/or cable bill for the month. |
