A list of good things to get for a backpacker or traveller, who is going to have to carry what you give them around
| | An mp3 player, so they have some entertainment. CDs are bad. |
| | Jewelry. It's something they can wear with them. |
| | A nice piece of clothing. It should be hand-washable and preferably sturdy. Linen and cotton is nice and light; wool or denim is too heavy unless you know thery're going somewhere cold. |
| | Something edible -- chocolates and the like. Tasty and a treat, and you don't have to carry them for long. |
| | A Swiss Army knife. Infinitely useful on the road. |
| | A hip flask. It's nice to be able to carry a small amount of libation with you. |
| | A good paperback book that you know they will enjoy -- but only one, and preferably not too thick. Paper is incredibly heavy. |
| | A good pair of boots/shoes/sandals, depending on their style and where they are traveling. |
| | A small and user-friendly GPS unit if they are tech savvy. Very useful for keeping track of places when staying in an unfamiliar city; you can program in the location of your hotel and the things you want to see, so you have instructions always at hand. |
| | Anything you know they need or are out of. Socks or shaving cream or toothpaste might not normally seem like gifts people would appreciate, but they are essential items and travelers will be very thankful for them. But don't load them up with lots of any one item (like a selection of nice soaps), since you can only use one at a time but have to carry them all. |
