General Training Tips for Dogs
TIPS

A list of general tips for training puppies and dogs. These aren't in any particular order.
| | Reward with praise, not food. This might be a bit hard to achieve at first, but you'll be glad you put in the time in the long run! A dog that is trained on treats learns to expect them after EVERY good behavior, and you're unlikely to have food on you every time you give a command. Training with praise teaches the dog to seek your approval rather than food, which will always be beneficial |
| | As a puppy, every time they act up, it shoud be corrected. If they get away with it once, they think they can get away with it next time! Don't ignore good behavior either. Praise them! |
| | Don't try to correct a wrongdoing if it's in the past (ie-you come home from work and your kitchen is a wreck). They probably won't remember doing it, and won't understand why you're upset. |
| | Use basic commands like "sit" and "stay" around the house for practice. Too many times owners wait to see if their dogs really know these commands when they are running out into a busy street. |
| | Be patient! Even older dogs forget things, and even housebroken dogs can have accidents. Remember, owning a dog is a fun thing! You're not just training an animal, you're training a longtime friend. |
