How to Cook with Kids
HOW TO

If your child wants to "help" you cook, here are some tips for making it an experience you can both enjoy.
| | Pick a day when you have time and patience. If you have to be somewhere in an hour or it’s been a rough day for you, simply tell your child you’ll let them help you cook another time. |
| | Choose a recipe that is kid friendly. Things that you bake are often the easiest to do – they don’t require many ingredients, and you don’t have to worry about your child staying away from the hot stove top. |
| | Make sure you have a sturdy chair or step stool for your child to stand on if they aren’t tall enough. Kids like to see all that’s going on. Also make sure they wash their hands first, because they’ll probably want to touch everything. |
| | Determine what steps in the cooking process your child is mature enough to handle. Can they measure out a cup of flour and place it in a bowl? Can they pour milk without spilling it? Can they crack open an egg? |
| | For preschoolers, you can measure out the ingredients and let them put them in the bowl. Or you can simply give them their own bowl, some flour, and a spoon, and let them “cook” beside you while you finish the steps that they can’t help with. |
| | Watch what they put in their mouth. Some cookie dough or brownie batter is ok (at least I think so!), but use common sense in how much of the raw ingredients they taste. |
| | Know going into it that it will probably take you much longer to finish the recipe than if you were doing it on your own, but remember to enjoy your child’s smiles and curiosity as they learn to cook with you. |
