USDA’s Seven Tips to Hurricane Recovery for Farmers and Growers

Growers who have been impacted by a hurricane should these few tips to help with the recovery process:

  •  
  • Take pictures of crop and structure losses,
  •  
  • Assess damage to infrastructure and repair critical systems,
  •  
  • Assess crop damage and separate salvageable from unsaleable plants,
  •  
  • Restore appropriate growing conditions,
  •  
  • Scout for insect and plant pathogen pests,
  •  
  • Hold off from fertilizing for a few weeks after the storm and be observant for the development of nutritional disorders, and
  •  
  • If there is a concern that water resources used for irrigation have become contaminated with salt water or agrichemicals, have water tested.
