Top 10 Biggest Shedders
BESTS
Tags: Dog, Breed, Shedding
If you're going to share your home with a dog, you'll need to deal with some level of dog hair on your clothes and in your house. However, shedding does vary greatly among the breeds: Some dogs shed year-round, some "blow" seasonally -- produce a snowstorm of loose hair -- some do both, and some shed hardly at all. If you're a neatnik you'll need to either pick a low-shedding breed, or relax your standards.
| 1. | Akita - The Akita is a large and powerful dog with a noble and intimidating presence. He was originally used for guarding royalty and nobility in feudal Japan. The Akita also tracked and hunted wild boar, black bear, and sometimes deer. He is a fearless and loyal guardian of his family. The Akita does not back down from challenges and does not frighten easily. Yet he is also an affectionate, respectful, and amusing dog when properly trained and socialized. | | 2. | Chow Chow - This distinctive-looking dog has a proud, independent spirit that some describe as catlike. He can be aloof--if you're looking for a cuddle buddy, this probably isn't the best breed for you--and downright suspicious of strangers. But for the right person, he's a fiercely loyal companion. | | 3. | Mal-Shi - The Mal-Shi is a hybrid. One of the few "designer dogs" not originating with a Poodle, and therefore not one of the ubiquitous "Poo" or "Doodle" hybrids, the adaptable Mal-Shi is an adorable, sweet little guy with a long name. Created with the same goal as the Doodles--to be a small companion who doesn't shed much and is therefore more appropriate for people with allergies--the Mal-Shi is a classic cross, a sweet lapdog who likes to play with the kids. | | 4. | Alaskan Malamute - The Alaskan Malamute features a powerful, sturdy body built for stamina and strength. It reigns as one of the oldest canine breeds whose original looks have not been significantly altered. This intelligent dog needs a job and consistent leadership to avoid becoming bored or challenging to handle. | | 5. | Finnish Lapphund - Believe it or not, this hard-working dog earned his keep herding reindeer in his native Lapland, in the far north of Finland. Friendly and gentle, the Finnish Lapphund retains a strong herding instinct. | | 6. | Newfoundland - The Newfoundland is a large, strong dog from--wait for it--Newfoundland. He was originally used as a working dog to pull nets for fishermen and haul wood from the forest. He is a capable and hardworking dog, well suited to work on land or water. He is a strong swimmer and equally strong "pack horse." Sweet-natured and responsive, he makes a wonderful family companion as well. | | 7. | American Eskimo Dog - Called "the dog beautiful" by his admirers, the American Eskimo Dog, or "Eskie," is a striking fellow with his white coat, sweet expression, and black eyes. He's a Nordic breed, a member of the Spitz family. Eskies are lively, active companion dogs who love to entertain and join in on all family activities. They are outgoing and friendly with family and friends, but reserved with strangers. Although the Eskie is a small dog--10 to 30 pounds--he has a big-dog attitude. | | 8. | Golden Labrador - Loving, devoted, and energetic, Golden Labradors are prized for their good-natured trainability. They make great family members--a natural with kids and social with other pets--as well as valuable guide, service, and bomb detection dogs. | | 9. | Pekingese - Pekingese were bred for centuries to be the cherished companions of the imperial family of China. Today they are still cherished family companions and show dogs who greet everyone they meet with dignity and grace. | | 10. | Belgian Sheepdog - This medium-size herding dog originated in Belgium where he was used to herd sheep. He later graduated to police work, and today his versatility makes him suitable for many types of work and dog sports. He's alert, devoted, and protective. |
