Reducing Waste During the Holidays – Ideas from the EPA

The holidays are a time when family and friends gather to celebrate a special occasion. They are also a time when a great amount of waste occurs. Gifts and holiday decorations can generate a large amount of waste. It is important to make a conscious effort to control sources of waste.
| | Use paper bags for wrapping paper. Have fun by decorating with stamps, pictures, etc. |
| | Use gift bags or decorative boxes that can be reused. |
| | Use the Sunday comics for wrapping paper. |
| | Collect bows, ribbons, and other decorations for later use. |
| | Holiday Cards |
| | Send e-greetings to family, friends, and business associates. |
| | Make gift tags from last year's holiday cards or use small, leftover pieces of wrapping paper. |
| | Use your children's artwork as holiday greetings. |
| | Purchase recycled content cards and envelopes. |
| | Make your own gifts. Consider baking cookies or other holiday treats to give to neighbors and coworkers. |
| | Consider non-material gifts such as tickets to a sporting event, concert, etc. |
| | Make a charitable donation in someone's name. |
| | Consider purchasing larger rolls of film. For example, purchase a roll of 36 exposures instead of 24. |
| | On Christmas, consider using an artificial tree that can be used many times. |
| | If you choose a real tree, after the holiday have it chipped/shredded for mulch. |
| | Store decorations for reuse. |
| | When decorations are no longer needed, consider donating them for use as classroom decorations at your child's school. |
