Certain scenarios happen that men usually take care of, but here's some tips if it's all up to you!

  •
  • Whether you’re single, living on your own, a man isn’t around, or you can’t stand men in genera- a woman should be able to hold her own. I’m talking when you get a flat tire, a mouse in the house or other duties that men automatically take responsibility for. Here’s a crash course of how to do all these “manly” things when all you got is yourself. Most of these things have already happened to me when both my boyfriend or father wasn’t around, and I just had to deal.

  • Flat Tire: My sister and I were about 2 miles from home when we felt that awful drag in the car and knew what it was. We pulled over on a side street and got out the manual. Much to our surprise, this woman pulled up right behind us, she said she noticed we were looking at the book and looked desperately lost. She showed us how it was done. Even if you aren’t an auto parts buff, you can still do it! First and foremost, get out the spare tire, a lug nut wrench and the car jack, which should all be located near the spare. Remove your hubcap if need be. Loosen the lug nuts BEFORE JACKING UP the car-- use a hollow pipe (about 2 feet in length) for leverage by putting it over the end of the lug nut wrench. Turn the wrench counterclockwise to loosen the lug nut. Loosen the lug nuts in a star pattern, first loosen one a few turns, then loosen the one opposite. Work across the tire until all the lug nuts are loose and unscrewed slightly. Jack up the car. Remove the lug nuts all the wa

  • A Mouse in the House: I was sitting on my couch—garden apartment in college, of course. And saw a critter come from the closet and walk across the hall into the “foyer” area. I just sat there looking at that nasty thing sliding across the carpet. A garden apartment comes with this kind of hold ups. I called the landlord—was on a weekend of course and they said they’d send maintenance over first thing Monday morning, as the only maintenance man John was at a funeral. That’s how my luck is, seriously. So, I got some d-CON. This stuff is fabulous, and, well, kind of gross. I sued the Baits, You don’t have to come in contact with mice to eliminate them from your home, the rodent just consumes lethal dose in one feeding and within a couple days, they are dead. Once they take the d-CON they have a need for going outside and getting fresh air, so they leave your house and die outside. I knew mine died, when the landlord on Monday afternoon was talking about a dead mouse by the stair

  • A Bat!: Now this is just plain creepy. A couple years back, I saw a bat hanging out in the corner of my bedroom in my gross college house. Your first response is to scream outside of the room and slam the door shut. Then what? I called my boyfriend even though I knew he was home visiting friends that weekend, perfect. I made a couple calls and no one came to the rescue. But, did you know, you can call the cops and they will come out? They do. And was I happy to see them. They brought in a tennis racket and plastic bag, and within 20 minutes, the female cop had it in the bag. Gross. Keep in mind you can rely on 911 for that emergency! I wonder if they have to do training for weird stuff like that. It wasn’t the first time for them though.

  • Stuck in Snow: I’m from the Midwest, and snow is a constant through the months of October through April. Always have kitty litter and a mini shovel in your car. Incase you get stuck; you can use this for traction and friction. Just because I came from a worrying mom, I also have a car phone charger, jumper cables and a blanket in my trunk as well.
  •
  • Someone is outside: Call 911. Have a gun in your house, and know how to use it. But, chances are, you won’t have a swordor a gun in your house, so call the cops and then call a neighbor. Don’t take any matters into your own hands.
