As you head into 2010 you aren’t the only one looking to improve your health and protect against potential illnesses. In 2009, the focus of healthy foods was on protecting against potent illnesses especially organic foods that were known to have natural cures. Well, as for this year, we are transitioning into foods that specifically fight certain heart disease and cancers. The spice of life is variety, right? Well, this year variety is the key element needed in your diet in order to sanction a healthy, long-life. Consuming a wide range of foods is the best way to ensure that one get’s all the needed vitamins, minerals, and photochemical- the disease-fighting compounds found in plant foods.
| 1. | 1. Berries- While the term super food has been conferred on some berries more than others; the entire family has been a hotbed for scientists. Acai berries, blackberries, blueberries, both wild and cultivated, raspberries, strawberries, and even cranberries-all have distinct benefits, showing that the term variety does indeed have merit. Some berries defend against cancer while others promote healthy arteries. Others still fight against cognitive decline. | | 2. | 2. Broccoli [and the Brassica family]: Here’s another powerful disease-fighting family also known as the cruciferous family. Brassica includes arugula, bok choy, brussel sprouts, various cabbages, cauliflower, collards, horseradish, radish, rapini, rutabaga, turnips, and watercress. All of these magnificent greens have the potent power to fight various stages of cancer, not to mention are packed with vitamins and minerals. | | 3. | 3. Whole Grains: Naming a number one whole grain isn’t fair. All whole grains have something to offer and by eating a mix you, you reap full benefits. Some like, Barley, Oat and Rye supply benefits for blood cholesterol and regulating blood sugar while others, like whole wheat, provide advantages for regularity. Refined grains do not possess the same distinct health benefits so choose wheat over white. | | 4. | 4. Green Tea: A defender against cancers-prostate, oral, skin, bladder, you name it_ seems that green tea’s brew of chemicals offers lofty benefits. It also acts as an antioxidant playing a part in keeping arteries healthy. Green tea is also known to promote healthy bones, like vitamin D. For those looking to shed a few pounds, it also acts as a hunger depressor. | | 5. | 5. Apples: They’re packed with soluble fiber, the type that reduces blood cholesterol and plays a role in regulating blood sugar. But there’s more to an apple a day reputation. Apples contain high – levels of flavonoids, which appear to reduce inflammation throughout the body. Inflammation is linked with heart disease, strike, and some cancers so eat up your apple peel. | | 6. | 6. Cold-water fish: Salmon, sardines, mackerel and tuna are all super sources of omega-3, a type of fat that is exclusively found in only nuts and fish mainly. They’re key to the brain health of especially infants and old people. In addition, they aid in helping fight heat disease, protecting healthy arteries, and promoting good vision and mental health. | | 7. | 7. Extra-Virgin Olive Oil: Simply put, it’s the juice of an olive and it’s filled with a wide assortment of juices that offer a ubiquitous range of health perks. Besides being a monounsaturated fat, it is full of compounds with health-promoting effects. In fact, it’s the same substance that provides an olive oil’s distinctive taste and colors that are responsible for the weaponry against disease. | | 8. | 8. Nuts: They’re small packages of goodness continue to impress- a decreases risk of diabetes, blood cholesterol lowering and ant-cancer action is just the tip of the iceberg. These super nuts as almonds, pecans, and walnuts provide essential omega-3s and are a great fill in between meals. | | 9. | 9. Pulses: Also known as legumes, dried peas and beans, pulses don’t get the notification they deserve. True, they’re thought of as peasant food but these days, that’s not such a bad thing. These wonderful health beneficiaries reduce blood cholesterol levels, help to regulate blood sugar and blood-pressure readings, and legumes are a clear winner as a meat substitute. The only drawback is the taste; mix them in with some potatoes. | | 10. | 10. Vitamin D: Yes, Vitamin D is a given on any healthy food list. It promotes healthy, strong bones as we were continuously taught but it also has some new unearthed qualities. And they’re staggering. Just the impact on the immune- system functioning alone is astounding. Besides compromising our ability to fight illness, a deficit of vitamin D is linked to type 1 diabetes in children and other auto immune system diseases like MS. It’s also being named a culprit in the development of certain cancers and heart disease. Adults and children are strongly advises to consume milk, preferably in whole grain cereal, everyday to prevent these illnesses. |
