If your sprain or strain doesn’t require a doctor’s immediate care, then you might benefit from the following “RICE” treatment:

  •  
  • Rest and don’t use the injured area for 48 hours
  •  
  • Ice placed ice on injury for 20 minutes, 4 to 8 times per day
  •  
  • Compression by using bandages to reduce swelling
  •  
  • Elevation of the injured area raised above the heart
