In order from best to worst (i.e. see #1 before #2 and don't see #7 unless you saw 1-6 first) and "See-it if you can" means the film is in limited release and may not be playing in a theater near you:
Not sure which movie to see this week in theaters? Let me help you out. The following is a list of films playing in the majority of theaters around the nation, and this is the first week in a long streak of must-see movie weekends, starting with:
| | 1. Get Him to the Greek - See-it - Jonah Hill and Russell Brand (both from Forgetting Sarah Marshall) hysterically re-unite in this Judd Apatow film about a record company intern with two days to drag an uncooperative rock legend to Hollywood for a comeback concert. |
| | 2a. Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage - (for the men) See-it if you can - An extremely interesting and entertaining documentary about the band that made their way through Canadian bars in the late 60s and 70s only to become multi-platinum group we karaoke to today. |
| | 2b. Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work - (for the ladies) See-it if you can - A brilliant and honest film about the woman who you know today as TV show host that is often the butt of plastic surgery jokes, but in the 60s was actually one the most successful female comedians of her time, a time when female comedians were few and far between. |
| | 3. Iron Man 2 - See-it - Expectedly, Iron Man 2 is bigger than the first, though not quite better, rightly focusing more on Tony Stark more than the Iron Man suit (only actually putting on the suit 3 or 4 times all two hours); however, missing the refreshingly interesting plot that made the first so great. |
| | 4. Shrek Forever After - See-it in 3-D - Unless you live in Manhattan and have to pay $20 per ticket, otherwise, wait for the DVD/Blu-ray because this Shrek film (like the 3rd) is a disappointment, cutting back on the pop-culture references that we loved in the 1st, and still missing the story that drawed us back into the 2nd. |
| | 5. Splice - See-it - Adrien Brody stars in this sci-fi-horror-thriller about scientists who tinker with DNA hybrids until something goes "terribly wrong" (as expected), but what comes next will pleasantly (and probably shockingly after seeing the laughable trailers) surprise you! |
| | 6. Winter's Bone - Rent-it - Don't miss this depressing yet hope-filled drama about a teenage girl whose father left her and her family behind trapped in a web of lies. |
| | 7. Double Take - Rent-it - This artsy education film about film is as entertaining as it is thought-provoking. I can't describe it for you any better than an ingenious montage of Hitchcock, war films and vintage coffee commercials. Just trust me and rent it when you can! |
| | 8. Robin Hood - Rent-it - This marks the 8th time the story about the outlaw archer and his "merry" men has been made into a film, and despite a solid performance by Russell Crowe and a few gripping action sequences from director Ridley Scott, this Robin Hood disappointingly brings nothing new to the story (fingers-crossed the director's cut on DVD/Blu-ray will be as much as improvement on the theatrical cut as Scott's Kingdom of Heaven). |
| | 9. The Karate Kid - Rent-it - It's nowhere near as good as the original version of the story about a kid who uses karate to better his life, so rent that if you haven't seen it, then maybe go see this reboot if you are still interested. |
| | 10. Micmacs - Rent-it - This odd and stylish farce is thin at parts, but the story billed as a "satire on the world arms trade" about a boy who's father is killed by a bomb and then shot later in life as an adult. |
