This is a list of the top carpet cleaning methods used by professional carpet cleaners.
| | Truck Mounted Hot Water Extraction: With this method of carpet cleaning, the equipment stays in the truck and the carpet cleaner brings in a solution hose and a vacuum hose. The vacuum blower and water pump are either powered by the vans engine or by a separate 2, 3 or 4 cylinder engine. The unit captures engine heat and blower heat to achieve water temperatures in excess of 200 degrees. This is the most popular cleaning method for several reasons. It is more efficient for the carpet cleaners which allows them to clean more rooms of carpet in a given day. It also delivers a cleaner and drier carpet because of the powerful vacuum and high cleaning temperatures. |
| | Portable How Water Extraction: With this method, the carpet cleaner brings all of the equipment into a home. The machine is powered by the household current which provides power for an electric vacuum motor. Some portable cleaning machines provide heat but the cleaning temperatures attainable are much lower than that of a truck mounted machine. Vacuum power is also much less than that of a truck mounted machine resulting in carpets that take longer to dry and slower cleaning times. Acceptable results can still be achieved using a portable HWE machine by a qualified cleaning technician. |
| | Bonnet Cleaning: With bonnet cleaning, the carpet cleaner first sprays a cleaning solution on the carpet and then onto a cotton or synthetic cleaning bonnet. The bonnet is then placed on the carpet and a buffer is used to spin the bonnet. This method produces good agitation but there is less rinsing action due to the low levels of moisture used. it is however an excellent method for interim maintenance or when quick dry times are a must. |
| | Dry Powder Cleaning: With this method, the carpet cleaner sprinkles a semi moist powder onto the carpet. He or she then uses a machine with counter rotating nylon brushes to agitate the powder. The powder acts like tiny sponges, breaking up and absorbing soil. After the powder has dried, usually in just a few minutes, the powder is vacuumed up and the carpet is ready for use. Like bonnet cleaning, this method is useful for interim cleaning and when getting the carpet back to use is a priority. It has limited results on heavily soiled carpets though. |
| | Shampoo Cleaning / Encapsulation: With shampoo cleaning or encapsulation cleaning, the carpet cleaner will spray a shampoo solution on the carpet. Then, using a machine with various different styles of brushes, they agitate the solution. It is then left to dry and as it dries, it crystallizes locking the soil in with it. After drying, the crystallized solution is vacuumed up and the carpet is ready for use. This method is excellent for carpets that need to be put back into use quickly like hotels or airports. |
