The Federal Minimum Wage as defined by the US Department of labor is currently $7.25 (2011). The first minimum wage established under the Fair Labor Standard Act was a quarter, yes, $0.25 an hour. Until 1980 the min wage was different for different types of labor such as interstate commerce, health profession, etc. In 1978 Congress set the min wage for all covered, non exempt employees.
