Dangers of Smoking when you have Diabetes
SAD
Tags:
It’s pretty obvious that smoking is bad for your health. No newsflash there. But when a diabetic smokes the effects can be much, much worse. So much so, one really has to wonder why anyone with diabetes would ever want to smoke. Of course as a non smoker, I’ve never had to go through the quitting process, but those with diabetes need to find a way to quit at all costs. With the advances in treatments available for quitting smoking, including patches, gum and other methods, there really is no excuse for a diabetic to continue to smoke.
So why is it such a big deal that a diabetic is at an increased risk? For several reasons.
And none of these problems take into account the normal effects that smoking has on lungs, bladder and the rest of the body. It’s been well documented that these additional effects can lead to several issues including cancer, which can shorten your life substantially.
On top of cancer, you could also be faced with emphysema, asthma, allergies and any number of other chronic diseases. Add these to diabetes, and you’ve got a recipe for a significantly reduced lifespan.
| | Reduction in blood flow in arteries and a blocking of increased flow when it’s needed |
| | Increased pain in the legs in diabetics with peripheral vascular disease and in the heart with diabetics who have coronary artery disease |
| | Changes in the arteries in the heart and other areas such as the brain and legs that precede the closing of the blood vessels |
| | Increases clustering of platelets – the blood elements that form a plug or clot that blocks the artery |
| | Increases blood pressure, which also worsens atheromatous plaques. |
