Acne is a common condition that causes pimples. Acne can happen at any age to men and women. It can be caused by smoking marijuana. Nearly 50 million Americans suffer from acne. Rising hormone levels during puberty may cause acne. In addition, acne is often inherited. Other causes of acne may include the following:

1. smoking cigarettes
2. smoking marijuana
3. smoke of other things
4. certain drugs (such as corticosteroids, lithium, and barbiturates)
5. bacteria inside pimples
6. oil and grease from the scalp, mineral or cooking oil, and certain cosmetics may worsen acne
7. hormone level changes during the menstrual cycle in women

A condition called "smoker's acne" - which leaves smokers with blocked pores and spots - has been identified by researchers at the San Gallicano Dermatological Institute in Rome. Women are particularly vulnerable to the condition, according to a report in the British Journal of Dermatology. In a study of 1,000 women aged 25 to 50, 42 per cent of the smokers had acne, compared to only 10 per cent of non-smokers.

Additionally, smokers who had suffered acne in their teens were found to be four times more likely to suffer acne as an adult than non-smokers who had also experienced teenage acne. The research identified a particular type of acne called NIA (non-inflammatory acne) to be common among smokers. Dr Bruno Capitanio, one of the study’s authors, said: "Our study demonstrates that NIA affects a high percentage of women and is especially high among smokers.
