Typhus is any one of several similar diseases caused by Rickettsia bacteria. Rickettsia is endemic in rodent hosts, including mice and rats, and spreads to humans through mites, fleas and head, body, and pubic lice.

  •
  • Symptoms include fever, headache, chills, and general pains that are followed by a rash.
  •
  • The rash spreads to the whole body except for the face, palms, and soles of the feet.
  •
  • This form of typhus fever is very similar to the typhus that is spread by lice (louse-borne typhus), but it is milder.
  •
  • The symptoms may appear from 1 to 2 weeks after the flea bite, usually within 12 days.
