Scabies is an infestation of the skin with the microscopic mite Sarcoptes scabei. Infestation is common, found worldwide, and affects people of all races and social classes. Scabies spreads rapidly under crowded conditions where there is frequent skin-to-skin contact between people, such as in hospitals, institutions, child-care facilities, and nursing homes.

	It may take between four to six weeks for a person to develop symptoms of scabies after coming in contact with an infected person.
	The following are the most common symptoms of scabies. However, each individual may experience symptoms differently. Symptoms may include:
	itching, usually severe
	rash, with small pimples or red bumps
	scaly or crusty skin (with advanced conditions).
