Scabies is a transmissible ectoparasite skin infection characterized by superficial burrows, intense itching and secondary infection. What do you know about preventing scabies?
| | Avoid sharing clothing and towels with affected people. |
| | If your child goes to sleepover parties, provide a sleeping bag, pillow and blanket from home. |
| | All family and close contacts should be treated at the same time, even if asymptomatic followed by cleaning of the environment, as a person can easily be reinfected with scabies. |
| | Items that cannot be washed should be sealed in a plastic bag and stored for approximately one week, because scabies mites die within one to four days if not in contact with human skin. |
| | Overnight freezing in a plastic bag for stuffed animals, brushes, combs, shoes, coats, gloves, hats, robes, wetsuits, etc. |
| | Clean the environment, as a person can easily be reinfected with scabies: Daily vacuuming floors, carpets, rugs, mattresses and furniture. Disinfecting floor and bathroom surfaces by mopping (only needs to be done after the first treatment). Daily washing of recently worn clothes, towels and bedding in hot water and drying in a hot dryer. Hot drying pillows for 30 minutes. |
