Treatments for Sarcoidosis

The treatment of sarcoidosis often depends on the specific needs and symptoms of each patient. Because the symptoms and severity of sarcoidosis may vary a great deal among different people, it is important to have a thorough medical evaluation to ensure proper diagnosis and treatment are received.
| | In a majority of patients, the disease spontaneously disappears, and no treatment is necessary. |
| | When therapy is recommended, the main goal is to keep the lungs and other affected body organs working, and to relieve symptoms. Drugs called corticosteroids are the most common treatment used in fighting sarcoidosis. |
| | As the granulomas are caused by collections of immune system cells, particularly T cells, there has been some early indications of success using immunosuppressants, interleukin-2 inhibitors or anti-tumor necrosis factor treatment (such as infliximab). |
| | Unfortunately, none of these have provided reliable treatment and there can be signficant side effects such as an increased risk of reactivating latent tuberculosis. |
