1. Understand voltage and phasing issues. Receptacles and mating plugs are configured differently to avoid fire hazards and equipment damage caused by improper voltage and phasing (when connected to equipment). If you need to convert a three-wire receptacle to a four-wire unit, you probably do not have the correct voltage or phasing for the equipment you are attempting to plug in.
2. Consider using an adapter. If you need to change a three-prong plug to a four-prong plug used in countries other than the United States, it is easier and safer to get an adapter for the specific country you plan to visit. They are available in most places that sell luggage.
