A simple garage workbench can be the perfect place to start and finish all those projects you have been meaning to do.

1. Attach a 16 foot long 2x4 horizontally to the wall studs. Use a level to make sure that this is attached appropriately. The top of the 2x4 strip was 3.5 feet of the ground. Our cars required 2.5 feet height clearance. Use 2.5in screws to attach the 4 in flat part against the studs.
2. Attach another 16 foot long 2x4 about 14in below the first one. The gap between the two parallel strips is defined by the length of 18in gray steel shelf bracket that I had used.
3. Shelf supportAttach the shelf brackets to the two strips. The top of the bracket is in line with the top of the top strip. Use a plywood piece on top (a temporary shelf) and then butt the shelf bracket against it. Use 1.5in screws to then attach the brackets. You will end up with two strips against the wall with a row of shelf brackets attached to them. The shelf brackets should be spaced approximately 2 feet apart.
4. Have a 3/4in 4x8 ft sheet of plywood cut into 2 feet wide planks at Home Depot. Place one of the 2 feet wide planks on the shelf brackets and screw the plank to the 2x4 strip from the top. Place the other plank next to the first one and join the two with a 6in wide x 18in piece of plywood butted to the two planks.
5. Place another 18 ft long 2x4 on top of the 16 foot shelf created by the plywood planks and screw this to the wall studs.
6. Glue and screw a 1.5in by 3/4in x 16 feet maple strip to the front of the plywood plank to take the abuse.
7. Making drawers: 1x4 pine strips can be attached to the bottom of the shelf, that is the 1in (actually 3/4in) part of the strip can be attached with glue and screws to the plywood sheet. Attach metal drawer slides to the strips first. Construct drawers with a hardboard base and pine sides (1x2in). Edges hold the mating drawer slides. These drawer boxes are then slid into the pine strips that are attached to your plywood plank/shelf/table/workbench. You have thin drawers just below your bench surface for all the small tools that you have!.
8. Attach drawers to the underside of the shelf. The drawers should be 2 feet wide, have a depth of 1.5in and stretch 18in to the back.
