HOW TO Wiki List

It takes more than just raw talent to make it in Hollywood. What you may ask? Check out the information below.

1. Attend as many A/V and film classes as possible in high school. Work on loads of creative projects, and save all the tapes/CDs/files. Try to get into a prestigious film school such as USC or UCLA. Even if you don't, programs such as AFI and LAFSC can be used to supplement a major. If this is the case, major in English or Art.
2. Save up at least $2000, which you'll need for a deposit and rent on an apartment. Live with roommates, and DO NOT live in Hollywood itself, as it's incredibly unsafe and filthy. Try to get an apartment in an adjacent area, such as West Hollywood or Burbank.
3. In L.A., clothes make the man (or woman). The importance of high fashion cannot be over-emphasized, but high price isn't a necessity. Shop at Savers, Out of the Closet, and outlet malls (such as the Citadel off the I-5 freeway). Set yourself up with a shabby-chic boho look.
4. Sign up at some temp agencies (do a Google search). Try to get work in the entertainment industry, and let everyone around you know that you have a clear, specific goal (i.e., "I want to write thrillers" or "I want to be an improv comedy actress.")
5. Look for open casting calls, or if you're a screenwriter, submit to competitions. Build your demo reel. The better your reel, the better your chance of being noticed.
6. Write constantly, whether you're a writer or an actor/actress. This keeps you fresh, and helps you develop an eye for good material. In conjunction to this, watch as many films as you can afford to. Consider a NetFlix account. Also, take classes whenever you get a chance, and learn about aid programs for aspiring actors and writers.
7. Don't give up! It takes most people at least 5-10 years in the city to sell a script or land a big role. Be prepared for the long haul. Get a steady job you can live with, hold down an apartment, and dig in for a drawn-out fight in the trenches.
