"If it hadnt been for cotton-eye joe; I'd been married long time ago; where did you come from; where did you go? " Hearing these lyrics may bring dread into the ear of someone who doesn't know the dance. Below is how you can have a great time at your get-together and get down to this song.

1. Stick out your right foot and tap the ground with the bottom of the heel twice.
2. Put your right foot behind you and tap the ground with your toe twice.
3. Put your right foot even with your left and raise it to your thigh in the front once.
4. Return it to even-footed position.
5. Raise it to thigh level behind you.
6. Return to normal position.
7. Take 2 steps: first to the right crossing feet right over left then left over right.
8. Clap with each step.
9. Spin twirling hand over head pretending to spin a rope until back at same spot.
10. Repeat until song ends, turn counter clockwise each time you start over.
