Do the Hustle!

1. Get some hustle music. See "Things You'll Need," below.
2. Listen to the music and learn to feel the beat. Hustle music is in 3/4 time which means there will be three beats per measure. Find them!
3. Now learn to count the beats. The count for hustle is "And-1, 2, 3. And-1, 2, 3." The "And" and "1" are part of the same beat so you will be taking TWO steps for the first beat.
4. Now practice stepping to the beat. Turn the music off and just count aloud to yourself. If you're a leader, start with your left foot on the "And." If you're a follower start with your right. Step every time you say a syllable, so four times per measure.
5. Start the steps to the dance now. If you're a lead, step with your left foot behind your right foot, shift your weight to your right foot, then replace your left foot, and step again with your right foot. If you're a follow, do the same but starting with your right. Do this in time to counting.
6. PRACTICE! Count and step for at least ten minutes until you can do it without thinking.
7. Turn on the music. Do the steps to the music.
8. PRACTICE! Do this for at least two songs.
9. Take your partner's hands, left hand to right and right hand to left. Hold them loosely. Do the steps in time to the music.
10. Once you're comfortable, keep the steps but turn so you're moving clockwise with each step.
11. Once you get good at this, start throwing in other moves. Hustle is a very forgiving rhythm, and as long as you keep the basic rhythm as outlined above, you can throw in moves from swing, salsa, merengue, west-coast swing, and cha-cha with relative ease.
12. PRACTICE! Go dancing!
