HOW TO
Tags: Death, Dying, Hospice, Grief, Dealing with Death, Terminal Illnesses
Each moment of life is precious and should be treasured. For those facing a terminal illness those moments of life can be especially sweet. Here are some ways that you can comfort someone who is dying.
| | Be there for them. Listen, share, love be a friend and companion to them in their last days/months/years. |
| | Offer to contact local health professionals to speak with them about how you can make their time here more comfortable. For example, pain medication, a more comfortable environment, or favorite/healthy foods. |
| | Treat them with simple respect. A person who is dying may feel dependent and as if you only feel sorry for them. Remember to treat them the way which you would want to be treated. |
| | Religion can be a great source of comfort for many who are dying. If they are a religious person, be sure to offer to get them a priest, read them scripture, or take them to church. |
| | Speak with them about the most significant events in their life. Help them to remember their accomplishments and the moments that made the biggest difference for them. |
| | Let them take the lead. If they want to talk, let them talk. Sometimes all someone needs is to be heard. |
| | Cater to their families needs. Offer to provide food and let them know that you are here for them also. |
| | Do not force yourself upon a dying person. If they feel uncomfortable with your involvement with them and their family let them be. These are their last moments and they have the choice to spend them as they wish. |
| | Remember to make them aware of what you are doing and what is going on around them. Although they may not seem to know what is going on it may not necessarily be true. Address them by name and always treat them with respect. |
| | The most important thing to remember when dealing with a individual who is dying is to make them comfortable so anything you can do for them would be appreciated. |
