Ways to Cut Down on Fat

Limiting fat in your diet, particularly saturated fat and Trans fat, is one of the most important diet changes we can make for optimum health. The Mayo Clinic offers 10 ways you can cut down on fat.
| 1. | Chill soups, gravies and stews and then skim off the fat that floats to the top. |
| 2. | Buy skim milk and other dairy products such as fat-free yogurt, cheeses, sour cream and cream cheese. |
| 3. | Limit using oils or butter for frying. |
| 4. | Cut out egg yolks. In eggs, it's the yolk that contains virtually all of the fat and cholesterol. |
| 5. | Cut out butter and margarine and replace with butter-flavored spreads or sprinkles. |
| 6. | Use fat-free salad dressing. |
| 7. | For a meal or two a week, use beans or legumes instead of meat in a salad, soup or as the main dish. |
| 8. | Use extra-lean ground beef, ground chicken or ground turkey. Instead of bacon, use Canadian bacon. Buy beef labeled "select" instead of "choice" or "prime." |
| 9. | Try meatless products, such as imitation hot dogs, bacon, burgers and sausage. |
| 10. | Eat fat-free ice cream or sorbet and top with berries or a fat-free nondairy whipped topping. |
