Occasionally the English language can be completely confusing. Here is some help!

  •  
  • accept, except, expect - I expected this to happen; everyone except John accepted the offer.
  •  
  • advice, advise - My teacher advised me with this advice.
  •  
  • affect, effect - The happy effects affected my mood.
  •  
  • all ready, already - Is it all ready, already?
  •  
  • a lot (much, many) - A lot of people wear sandals. Many people wear dress shoes.
  •  
  • amount, number - A large ammount of energy went into moving the large number of boxes.
  •  
  • beside, besides - I won't sit beside him; besides, he has a girlfriend.
  •  
  • choose, chose, chosen - Yesterday I chose swiss, I should've chosen cheddar, today I'll choose correctly.
  •  
  • complement, compliment - The fact that they complement each other is a compliment.
  •  
  • conscience, conscious - My conscience tells me stealing is a conscious choice.
  •  
  • device, devise - I devised that cool device.
  •  
  • few (fewer), little (less) - Few people have less time than me.
  •  
  • formally, formerly - Formerly, we were told to dress formally.
  •  
  • have, of - I have a lot of money.
  •  
  • hoping, hopping - I was hoping the hopping bunny would go away.
  •  
  • imply, infer - I implied this; and he inferred that.
  •  
  • its, it's - When it's time, the computer will run its program.
  •  
  • lay, lie - Lay/laid means "to put." Lie/lay means "to rest."
  •  
  • lead, led - We led for most of the game; now they have lead.
  •  
  • loose, lose - If you leaves your shoelaces loose, you will lose your shoe.
  •  
  • passed, past - In the past, Marino passed for touchdowns, now Peyton has past him.
  •  
  • principal, principle - The principal told the teachers to have some principles.
  •  
  • than, then - Then again, the quiz was harder than I thought.
  •  
  • their, there, they're - Look over there! They're playing with their puppies.
  •  
  • to, too - I don't want to come off too strong.
  •  
  • which, who - He is the one who invented the razor, which I use every day.
  •  
  • whose, who's - Who's going with us? And whose luggage is this?
  •  
  • you're, your - You're the one that lost your wallet.
