Asthma Prevention
| | Since it is not known why some people develop asthma and others do not, preventing the condition itself is not possible. Fortunately, there are several things you can do to reduce the symptoms of asthma that make breathing difficult. These include: |
| | Reducing exposure to environmental triggers, such as pollens, molds, secondhand tobacco smoke and animal dander. Some tips for reducing your exposure to these triggers: |
| | Keep your home cooled to between 68 and 72 degrees Fahrenheit |
| | Provide good ventilation with HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) filters, fans and other devices |
| | Maintain humidity between 40 and 50 percent |
| | Wear a mask when cleaning the house or performing yard work ‑- or better yet, delegate these tasks to others |
| | Add mold inhibitor to paint, especially in damp places like the bathroom |
| | Replace carpeting with hard flooring |
| | Closely follow the asthma action plan created with the help of your doctor. Keep the plan in an accessible place (such as on a refrigerator door or in your purse) and be sure to take all asthma medications as directed. |
| | Lead a healthy lifestyle that includes proper rest, good nutrition and regular exercise. |
| | Maintain a healthy weight. For reasons not fully understood, there appears to be a relationship between obesity and increased incidence of asthma. Obese individuals who lose weight often shed symptoms of asthma as well. |
