How the Telephone Works
JUST THE FACTS
Tags: telephone, invention, bell, how, works, explanation
This is how the telephone works. The telephone is actually a relatively simple device. It consists of less than ten parts that work together to allow sending and receiving calls through a large, complex network.
| | Microphone: This is a simple microphone that allows you to transmit your voice across the phone network. |
| | Speaker: This is what allows you to hear the person on the other line. |
| | Duplex coil: This part makes sure that the sounds transmitted through the microphone don't reach the speaker. |
| | Hook Switch: This is a switch that alternates between the telephone being connected and disconnected from the network. Multiple taps of this switch allow calls to different lines. For example, rapidly tapping the hook switch 8 times would be the equivalent of pressing 8. |
| | Ringer: This device lets you know when you are receiving a call. |
| | Wall jack/Phone line: This allows the phone to be connected to the network. |
