The term extortion in legal terms means the use, or the express or implicit threat of the use, of violence or other criminal means to cause harm to person, reputation, or property as a means to obtain property from someone else with his consent. USC 18. It happens in many ways and in many forms. One way it happens is on the internet, and here is how you can protect yourself.

| | Ensure security is installed at every possible entry point. |
| | Identify all machines connected to the Internet and assess the defense that's engaged. |
| | Identify whether your servers are utilizing any ports that have been known to represent insecurities. |
| | Ensure you are utilizing the most up-to-date patches for your software. |
